It turns out this is only a problem in Wayland sessions and it doesn't
matter how you open the document (nautlius or command line, such as

Apparently, some emails make Thunderbird display various images above
the email list. Deleting the email causes the images to disappear,

I'm not sure what that meant. Could you rephrase? Note that the issue is
that the user turns OFF Wi-Fi, but the system turns ON Airplane mode.
An analogy would be one wants to flush the toilet, but the computer
turns off the lights, instead. Perhaps some of the goals are
accomplished either way,
