I have the same issue on a normal (non-desktop) Ubuntu 18.04 running
XMonad with Gnome and using the gnome-shell.

Thanks for getting back on this so fast.
I followed the proposed steps:
1. `ubuntu-bug _usr_lib_xorg_Xorg.1000.crash` reported the bug, but
closed silently. I did not get a new bug ID. Where can I find it?
2. On that page I can find crashes from 2017, but none from after the
upgrade to Ubuntu

window manager.
After upgrading to Ubuntu 18.04 and switched to xmonad the problem still occurs.
It seems currently that the crash occurs randomly.
Sometimes not at all for a day, sometimes after

A workaround is to restart gnome-panel after the error occurred. Just
enter pkill gnome-panel into console.

The main problem seems to me, that the no-password-login is provided by giving
the user some special group.
Why not configure such a thing in /etc/gdm/custom.conf and move the checkbox to
gdmsetup? I think, most users will look there for enabling such a feature.
