Looks like it is related to an extension. Haven't had a problem since I
disabled all of them.
This bug can be closed. Once I identify the extension causing the CPU load I'll
report an issue on its github page.

The issue still exists for me with the kernel out of the PPA. System
freezes completely when trying to adjust brightness.
