I believe I found the problem. The ownership on /var/lib/PolicyKit was, for some unknown reason, root:avahi. I changed it to root:polkituser, and all appears to be well - no ck-launch-session needed. I'm not sure how the directory ownership got messed up, but it's likely to have been my fault. I
