Agreed, it makes Ubuntu appear slow or that it is suffering from
performance problems.

I have the same problem: Dell Inspiron 510m that only can show 640x480
usplash and have misaligned progress bar. Says it cant use 1024x768 nor
800x600 although X.org supports them just fined both when entering
gnome. I as well are using feisty.
