I've encountered the same problem as described above on Ubuntu 18.04.
In my case, the dual-boot is Ubuntu and Windows 10 and 2 NTFS partitions for
Windows. Ubuntu is also installed in a different partition (as above).
The steps to reproduce and the workaround are exactly the same and the issue i

driver again, and although it reports the same thing, it appears to be
using the proprietary driver. So far so good, hope this thing lasts.

I can confirm this with my GT 520 card, but when I deactivate the
driver, reboot, activate again, and reboot again, everything seems to
work fine again, even though Additional Drivers reports that driver is
activated but currently not in use. Hopefully this will last.

What I tried is I entered a virtual terminal and typed command "sudo

Oh, I just read your comment. I actually reinstalled Ubuntu 10.04,
upgraded to 10.10, reset ubuntu with the rm -rf command I listed above,
and retried the upgrade, but this time it actually worked. I think I may
have figured out the reason why Ubuntu could not calculate the changes.

Affirmative, this problem with gliiper has persisted for me for years
with various versions of Ubuntu and it's still present in Maverick beta.
The problem is the bug is inconsistent: crashes occur in approx 25% of

I can confirm the freeze of the xserver on system startup with linux-
image-2.6.15-25-686 and the proprietary "nvidia-glx" drivers. The

Well, I've been using VMware on Dapper recently with kernel-
image-2.6.15-25-686 and I haven't experienced any networking problems or
