three machines I have with up-to-date 16.04.5, I am met with the
"Authentication failure message" and am forced to switch to the greeter
which on some boxes (e.g. my workstation with multiple NVIDIA GPUs)

I have my screen connected to HDMI, and I also have a DP cable plugged
in. The single screen attached gets detected twice, xrands shows both
HDMI-1 as connected (primary) and DP-1 connected as well. If I
disconnect the DP cable xrandr does now show it as connected anymore.

As I'm not really experienced, I will try to induce the lockup either
with a live CD or if it does not work I will try to free up some space
and install Jaunty somewhere.

Thanks for the tip, however I have Hardy and I don't really feel like
upgrading, not even to Intrepid. At the same time I have checked the
xserver-xorg-core 1.5.3 but in order to just install on Hardy I'd need to
upgrade quite a bunch of other packages as well and there is no guarantee

video file is opened (using Totem but as far as I remember it happened
