@Maarten: I don't think I did anything other than reinstall unity-2d- default-settings. As a matter of fact, I think I did unity-qt-default- settings on the first machine. Both came up back normally, with both showing Unity 2d in the chooser, and I checked version numbers and they are current

I believe this is an incorrect behavior. I should have control over my own system to make windows the size I want without them going maximized. Case in point, Firefox is taking up roughly 75% of my screen and it maximizes every time I launch. At very least, the thresholds need to be tweaked to
