I also found this issue. The last uboot need DTC 1.4. but dtc version
is 1.3.0 when I install device-tree-compiler_1.4.0-1_amd64.deb.

I agree the unpatched version does have the same behavior, however I was
referring to the pre-hardy version of ubuntu when this problem initially
came up. Gutsy did not have this issue.

I am running intrepid.
My machine is not joined to any domain.
I go to Places -> Connect to Server...
Select select "Windows Share" from the service type.

Click Connect
I get a prompt for the password
Enter the password.
Then I get the error message

Here is a compiled binary for amd64 of the first issue in this
thread. It does not solve the whole issue but might help some people

I have this problem after applying updates on Dec 5.
I was not upgrading to 8.04 this was standard update of network-manager
on 7.10 gutsy. I also see the same behavior when just restarting the
network-manager services.
The service
I also want to note I was NOT doing an upgrade just a regular update
with update manager when this problem cropped up. I am running Gutsy
7.10.
