Faults of this sort have been happening sporadically ever since the
installation. I haven't noticed any symptoms yet, the crash reporting
tool coming up is the only sign that anything went wrong.

I've little experience with reporting linux bugs, so I don't know how to
respond. It's a pre-release version of Ubuntu I'm talking about, maybe
