One last point, this is a USB 3 drive being plugged into a laptop (Dell
Precision M90) which only has USB 2. None of the external USB hard
drives I use on this laptop have this problem.

After copying just 230MB from this external drive to my laptop's local

I have now had to rebuild my laptop and now running 3.5.0-17-generic
kernel and all is working again. When I perform a sudo apt-get upgrade,
it informs me that there is a new kernal available but it is holding it
back. This is obviously 3.7.0-4.12-generic but this time, I will not

So here is the strange thing, periodically my printer is available so
CUPS must start under certain circumstances. It is not very often but
occasionally my printer is there. I will try and work out under what
conditions CUPS is starting.

Just loaded Ubuntu 10.04 (Kernel 2.6.32-15-generic, fully patched as of
06/03/2010 7:24 GMT) and still have the same sound problems as before.
No sound until you turn the volume my volume up and then it nearly blows
my speakers. I have seen this problem through 9.10 to the latest
release.

Within Sound Preferences, I have now set the master output volume as low
as it will go and then adjusted each applications volume down to an
acceptable level so I now have sounds again.

I am running the beta as of 27/03 and have a DELL Precision M90. I get
this beep when I shutdown and it is VERY LOUD! I too do not have any
setting in the Volume control to turn this off
