Agreed, X is running on VT7 for me as well and not VT1.
Also, removing the nvidia driver and using the "nv" driver seemed to
solve my problem (before removing plymouth) in gdm, but would then
freeze after log

Yes, that seems to work. I see errors relating to plymouth when I boot
now and startup hangs for a good 20-30 seconds before saying it cannot
mount plymouth... but it works! :)

Yes, in the meantime that is what I will have to do.
knetworkmanager is a totally different program; I happen to like using
Network Managment and would like to continue using it.
Would you find it acceptable if after installing updates one of the
programs you use daily is broken? :)

Hardy picked that kernel for me; I had to manually install -generic with
apt-get for some reason. I have a Intel Centrino Duo 2ghz CPU, so I'm
betting not using -generic was hindering performance a bit.
After a reinstall (thank you libc), all is good. :) I have not had -386
installed by default si

don't see any newer kernel version.

Sound still does not work as of today, with all recent updates and
several different /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base configurations.

zip/tar is supported by default, why not rar (unrar)? It's small and
there is a open source version, right? Many files use rar, and it's a
pain to have to manually enable rar s
I can confirm this. Newest 8.04 iso works (sound) and it resolved the
majority of issues with my laptop. The fan is even working (7.10 made it
turn off/on over and over again non-stop).

Besides the mic never working on 7.10, the sound worked.
It required this in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base: options snd-hda-intel

Also, I notice that I have trouble doing multiple tasks at once. If
nothing is going on, and I ping yahoo.com I see my usual 30ms. If I load
something (google.com, for instance) it takes a good 30 seconds to load
google.com... ping shows a leap up to 90ms!

I've tried removing the atheros drivers included with ubuntu, and
instead compiled the madwifi drivers from source.
This did not resolve the issue, which seems to confirm that it's a
wireless-tools bug / version conflict.

I'm having the same problem with the latest version of Gusty. I did a
dist-upgrade from 7.04 to 7.10. (Not a fresh install!)
Linksys WRT54G AP, using WPA. (wpa_supplicant).
