I really think its an compiz bug, disabling the compiz animation plugin fixed it. I had the same issue with Ubuntu Edgy and compiz, but never with beryl. Also I have the same effect when using an ATI x800 based video card and radeon or fglrx video drivers. I also suggest labeling this as a bug
