Different to the Ubuntu 18.10 installer the Kubuntu 18.10 installer does not
support selecting a file system type when creating an encrypted root partition
during installation.
The consequence is that one will always end up with luks+ext4.
My specific use
I tested the new kernel 4.2.0-35 and it works.

I was not able to identify a non-working mainline kernel. Therefore, I
do not know what to bisect.
Both mainline 4.2.0-040200 and 4.2.4-040204 which are the mainline
builds available for wily closest to 4.2.0-30 work.
I suspect, the bug is not present in the mainline kernel at all.

I do not believe, that Jeremys example has anything to do with the bug
filed here.
However, I do experience the bug described by Jeremy. I suggest to move his
