I've had the same problem with my Ubuntu. I did a fresh install on my girlfriends computer, when you run pppoeconf the first time, it works beautifully. Once you reboot the computer, I get teh same error as the guy above me. I've searched online for a fix, I first found out that ubuntu does not standard install the pppoe package. I installed that, attempted configuration again. First configuration it worked fine, after that not again.
