This problem affects Linux Mint, Kubuntu and Ubuntu. I have had the
same problem on all three flavors. I have been using the manual
partitioning.

Appears problem isolated to the "vga=791" option. Since this is a
server and no X, cannot speak for the problems with X. However if there
is no X I do not see how alt-F7 will ever work. That is the virtual
term for Xserver.
What has changed in grub with the "vga=" option?

Upgraded from server 9.10 to 10.04 today with same blank screen problem.
Computer does boot, however after the "boot hd (0,0)... there is no
other output. No login from F1-F6 or alt-F7. ps ax show gettys but no
login via console.
