Fixed :-)
The issue is actually in libtar 1.2.20-3 in Ubntu 14.04, I downgraded it
to 1.2.19-1 from saucy and everything works again.

lirc installs the modprobe config /etc/modprobe.d/lirc-serial which creates

slot. Both of these devices as well as the FireWire port are controlled
by the Ricoh R5C552 (see here for more:
