fonts not re

After a recent update, many fonts are no longer rendering properly.
Only four characters will render for any text object.
The problem is widespread, and appears to affect gtk programs, but gtk
was not among the packages updated. As a control, I updated a laptop
that I hadn't
This bug also manifests on Precise. However, switching to any other
window manager relieves the issue. It seems to be something about Gnome
and/or Unity.
