It looks like the issue is related to GNOME's settings - specifically
the touchpad_enabled setting being set to false. See
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1606153 for discussion.
The following solution works for me. Open a terminal (or press Alt+F2), and
enter:
gconftool -s -t bool
This problem appears to have gone away for me. I don't know if it's
something from natty-updates which has done the trick, but I haven't had
a crash in over a week with the default kernel.

My impression is that gpointing-device-settings is simply a graphical
frontend to the xinput command. Given that it's not part of the default
install, I can't see that it has it's own critical function. The code
certainly looks like a frontend, given a cursory look.

This also affects my Eee PC 1001P, though it does not appear to relate

I've also been unable to find the 2.6.35.10 kernel in the place
specified, but I did install 2.6.35.9 and it works flawlessly for me -
don't know if this is helpful or not.

With the new 2.6.35-25.44~SPC01LP703553 package installed, I can confirm
that the graphics failed as they did with the original 2.6.35-25.
I'm assuming that this package replaces the stock 2.6.35-25 in the grub
menu with the new version - it didn't show up separately as the mainline
kernel image
I should also add that the mainline 2.6.36 kernel from
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline also works fine for me.
