I just encountered identical misbehavior of VirtualBox (same error message) in a fresh install of Kubuntu 8.04, freshly updated as of 2008-05-09. I am too much a newbie to follow all the issues or workaround instructions (heck, I just now failed to find my kernel number - I only see it flash past on startup), but I enabled downloads from universe and multiverse to no avail. Downloading from 'main' rather than 'New Zealand' was no help. So in some way this bug seems not to have been dealt with as completely as indicated here.
