I had the same issue with HP Probook G8, bought this year.
Fn key worked fine when I installed Ubuntu 20.04, but later they started
behaving as described here. The brightness buttons (Fn F3 and Fn F4) started
turning on and off the digital mic.

However, using the swap that is not encrypted works.

The disk drive for /dev/mapper/cryptswap1
Confirmed on several laptop/desktop PCs. Swap partition not available after the
install. The temporary workaround was to:
1) install gparted
2) format swap partition as linux-swap
3) comment/delete line in the /etc/crypttab containing description of cryptswap1
4) use sudo blkid to find your new UU
It is fairly annoying. In reference to #4, a WORKAROUND is once logged
in to connect to your WiFi connection (i.e. eduroam). Then click on the
network icon in the top panel, select Edit Connections and change
settings for your connection (i.e. eduroam). Go to the General tab, and
uncheck "All users
Confirmed on several PCs:
- System76 Lemur
- Asus X202E
- Dell Optiplex desktop
Just like in post #36 and others. Workaround in #10 is helpful although
it does not solve the problem.
