I have the exact same problem as n_s_simpson. Performed an
update/upgrade yesterday (took me from Unity 5.2 to Unity 5.4). Also, I
have Ubuntu Tweak installed - not sure if that makes a difference. And
now nothing will run from the dash.

I pretty much get it every time I try change a compiz setting (using
advanced compiz settings manager). Haven't tried in the last few days...
