Running 14.04.2 on a X1 Carbon 3rd gen, suffering from the same problems. Especially when an external screen is attached, Thunderbird has corrupted fonts when opening directly on the external screen. If I open Thunderbird on the internal screen and move it over to the external, all is fine.
