The minimal virtual install is working because it does not install the 'irqbalance' package. This problem happens on both 10.04 and 10.10. Install it however you want (normal install, or regular minimal; which looks just like normal to me but minimal virtual doesnt have LIC support), then uninstall 'irqbalance'. Your problem should be solved. Hopefully somebody can find a workaround so irqbalance can be installed again.
