It's fixed in vanilla kde 4.2.4 but still appears on my system, which
runs kmail 4.2.4-0ubuntu1~jaunty1~ppa2
Workaround described in the comments helps.

This still seems to be open. I updated manually, later adpets wants to
perform dist-upgrade, fails around step 2, and wants to fail a bug
report. So here.
