This hits quite frequently. Usually when I log in, and GNOME tries to
open a nautilus window for my home dir, it fails. Apport detects this
crash.

I just discovered that these appear at times of high volume of disk
writes. Just that I anyways see good amount of disk writes right after
bootup. However, my disk is SATA, so I cannot understand how that is
related to the messages.

I am hitting the same problem. This reproduces 100% of the time.
Additionally, it takes me to the system configuration screen. It has
somehawe reset the hostname of my laptop, too, and asks me to create a
new user apart from asking about keyboard layout, time zone, & language.

On my Lenovo T61 laptop, sometimes the boot process gets stuck with
just a blank tty. No HDD LED activity. However, often justa reboot works
fine. Also, Attempting to switch ttys during boot appears to help.
Karmic on my Lenovo T61 goes into a blank screen after updating to the
-185 driver. Eagerly awaiting the 185.18.36.

I see the same behavour when I try to hibernate using either the
shutdown button, or the laptop key combo (Fn F12 for me) with a Lenovo
X60. However, it hibernates & wakes up fine when I try with the menu
that appears when I click the battery icon.
