2) open another application, like nautilus
3) close this other application, so that the focus returns to link.py

but not for *efficiency*. Trash does benefit from infinite size, but
that does not change the fact that the corner approach requires two
movements instead of just one.

Binary package hint: unity
The "Desktop" placeholder menubar that appears on Unity when no window
is focused has no title. This looks inconsistent, makes harder for the
user to know that a placeholder menubar exists in the first place and
leaves an awkward left ga
Correction: you don't have to actually open a new window and unfocus it.
Clicking on the desktop is enough for the menu to start appearing.
Apparently when you log in nothing, including the desktop, has focus.
The main point remains, though: this first click should not be
necessary. The desktop sh
first time and unfocus it. It should already work from the
beginning.
Currently, a user who has just logged in to Unity and has not opened any
windows yet has no Desktop menubar available.

Oh, I will, of course, have an eye on dpkg and related processes once
this happens again. So far, it has not happened for 3 or 4 days on my
machine (knock on wood), but I also rebooted twice recently, due to the

I can now confirm that the issue seems unrelated to suspending/resuming.
After a continuous uptime of more than 90 hours, my machine just ran
into this issue again -- not for the first time within these 90 hours,
