I can confirm that it happens every time for me (Linux ubuntu
2.6.24-19-generic #1 SMP Wed Jun 18 14:43:41 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux)
It does not happen with e.g. synaptic, but happens every time with
gdmsetup. I am running from a root shell after running sudo su.
