Force Unity to show pidgin icon in tray.
At example, get current list of displayed icons:
$ gsettings get com.canonical.Unity.Panel systray-whitelist
['JavaEmbeddedFrame', 'Mumble', 'Wine', 'Skype']
and set new list with Pidgin
$ gsettings set com.canonical.Unity.Panel systray-whiteli

I will try to test upstream kernel soon. This issue, if I understand google
right, also affects on other laptops from HP Pavilion series. In current state
of snd-hda-intel Mute LED works only with very old HP laptops.

Thank you, Jelle Foks. Your workaround works for me. In my case not only
power manager icon dissapear (if I remember this propertly, now I use
AWN notification applet instead gnome-panel), but after disable gnome-
power notifications issue was gone.

Upd: Empty space beetween icons appear after run applications without
notification area icon support (browser, terminal, file manager, etc.).
This happens also in AWN (avant window navigator) notification area, so,

Laptop does not power off after shutdown. Last message during shut down
is from kernel and contain string "shutting down". Reboot works fine.
