No, I do these actions quite often and this is the first time it
happened.
I've tried to crash it again but the damn thing is now solid as a rock
:)

Yep, now no application will open other than the ones already running.
All I get is a Starting "application name" in the lower panel which
disappears after a few moments.
Firefox somehow did run, detected a previous crash and restored open
pages, which is how I'm posting this.
Log off/restart etc

This time it took FireFox with it as well. Terminal remained open, as
did Evolution. I'll try the beta version you suggested but this is
beginning to look like a system-wide problem.
