I think this bug affects me as well.
It seems that the system doesn't switch to tty8 properly. If desktop
fails to load I can sometimes get it to appear by first switching to
tty1 then tty8. A bit more reliable way seems to switch to tty1 and
delete ~/.cache before logging into unity8.

I've been having trouble with this as well. Managed to break both ubuntu
on my desktop and laptop by accidentally installing the nvidia stuff
(that'll teach me to gloss over apt-get "to be installed" lists).
Managed to work around it by simply building pyopencl fram source,
everything seems to work
I've been having the same issue with kernel 3.12.0-rc4. Decided to try
perinda's patch, it seems to work, but only after I fixed an issue with
whitespaces (I had to replace 4 spaces with a single tab).
