result. It may not be elegant, but it worked for me.

Had the same problem. The following workaround worked for me. You may try it.
In the /etc/default/ grub file set the following lines as shown:
GRUB_TIMEOUT=5
GRUB_TERMINAL=console
Save the file and then execute:
sudo update-grub
See if it works for you.
