this bug evolved for my laptop in a sort of consequential hardware
bug: the power down button is quite broken. Who'll be the survivor? My
laptop's shutdown button or the powerdown kernel (?) bug?

Uooo! This is odd!
Yesterday, despite all the problems with shutdown I wanted to give the
hibernate function a try. After saving all the stuff to the hd,
showing some warnings from the USB I waited the hdd led to stop
blinking and I powered off the laptop with the poweroff button (as I
always did).
System: PackardBell V7908, Centrino Duo, Feisty Fawn;
symptom: never powered off.
Some time ago I went through a buggy installation of FUSE, that messed

afraid of the task, so I think that I'll keep my Edgy until I'm really
upset of all the issues it has and I'll go back to... No!, not Windoze!,
back to Dapper LTS! :-D

I have a CentrinoDuo laptop (ICH7) from PackardBell and it won't power
off anymore since Edgy upgrade; can't tell if it happened within a
kernel upgrade; as all the others my system stop functioning with the
text "Will now halt" and simply... won't halt!
