I confirm this issue is still present in Ubuntu karmic Beta. I am using
the amd64 version and i see text booting for almost 15 secs before
xsplash starts.

I confirm it happens on a faully updated hardy heron too. I also
discovered it's not just releated to firefox itself, but also to panel
animations. Try opening firefox from the panel button, and keep the
mouse over the icon fading effect: it will disappear as it do with
firefox. I didn't tried, but
Mmm so as far as i read the fix will not be released for hardy since it's a low
urgency bug, and is not worth to spend efforts on it (maybe also considering
that the upgrade may bring some kind of regressions?).

Ok the first workaround by changing the xres and yres in usplash.conf
worked for me, but i also tried the other fix by brettalton on another
fresh installation, here is the result (of course usplash now works)

I'm running a fresh install of ubuntu 7.10 i386 installed with the alternate cd
I have a 15inch screen, resolution of 1024x768, and an nVidia RIVA TNT2 model64
with open drivers (but i see that it happens with closed drivers too)
Looking to the new "screen and graphics" sett
After some tries, i noticed that setting the screen as "plug n play" but
keeping the resolution the bold fonts problem disappears, even if the
bad resolution remains.
The only way to get my screen working properly is to set screen as "plug
n play" and the resolution as [EMAIL PROTECTED]

So, you mean that compiz will never work with this old driver or it is
just an annoying bug? I know that the card is really old (and i'll
surprise if compiz will work fine on it) but I think it's strange that
the legacy driver does not work with compiz.

I have a similar problem here: I just installed ubuntu 7.04 and then immediatly
upgraded to the newest gutsy RC.
When i try to activate desktop effects from the new "appearance" control panel
all I get is "desktop effects can not be enabled". I also tried to run "compiz
--replace" into a termina
Uhm... I will try to install feisty stable in another pc to look if this
is releated to a specific hardware problem. Soon i will reinstall feisty
on the pc which displayed the error on first startup to look if this
happens again.

it happened with no reason, since i was using firefox and not quodlibet.

Same error happened to me.
It crashed while i was deleting a custom folder. I tried to reproduce it by
creating and then deleting a new folder in apps=>multimedia (i don't remember
exactly the apps tree name in english because my system language is italian)
