I can confirm that enabling / disabling the "Power Manager" application
in System -> Sessions will cause this behavior to occur.
As an aside, I disabled the power manager after a recommendation by
powertop.

Success! I picked up the 173.14.05 version of the nvidia driver and
dkms from the repo as well.
Steps to test:
remove linux-restricted-modules-generic
linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24-19-generic envyng-core envyng-gtk
remove /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia/nvidia.ko
nvidia_le
I've added the hardy-proposed repo, but there are no updates to envyng-
core in that repository. Can you verify that the update is there?
BTW - I forgot to mention that this is an AMD64 box running 64 bit
Hardy.

NVidia driver not completely installed by EnvyNG

After an upgrade from Gutsy to Hardy, X comes up in a low resolution. I
determined this was due to a mismatch between the kernel driver and the
NVidia libraries. I completely removed all nvidia packages, and
attempted to use EnvyNG to properly load the drivers. X was still
Linux#DVD_drive_not_recognized
with potential fixes...I haven't had a chance yet to rebuild the CD to
see if this solves the problem.

I am also not using Network Manager.
As a side note, this behavior still ocurrs with Firefox 1.5.0.7 and
