As you pointed out, installing nvidia-driver-390 from the Ubuntu repos
solved the problem.

First, I added this PPA via the usual procedure:
$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa
Below there is the NVidia chipset I want to install the drivers for:
