Agree. I'm using synclient TouchpaddOff=1 to turn the touchpad off
completely, but it starts working again after a few seconds.

This works for me too when the touchpad CAN be disabled... however at some
random point that tab in the Mouse Configuration options dissappears, and
the touchpad gets enabled again.
