Thank you for taking the time to report. When I run your test script with bash (under karmic), I get the backslash as it should be. However when I run it with dash (the default /bin/sh since edgy, 6.10) the backslash does not get displayed. Please run 'ls -l /bin/sh' so that we can decide if this
