No, it wouldn't. And even if it did, I was advocating the change to M686
only for the generic-pae kernel exactly because of the need for the
generic kernel to be compatible with old CPUs.

I think PAE kernels should always be compiled as at least M686, as PAE
by definition require a Pentium Pro or later processor.

Yep, pre-2005 Pentium Ms and Celeron Ms that didn't support NX didn't support
