I checked the usb/core/quirks.c and other various source code under
driver/usb/storage, but only one file sticks out as targeting the
vendor, and it doesn't have code related to this device.
I am not aware of any method to use an upstream kernel during a Live
CD/DVD/USB to install Ubuntu/Kubuntu. I have only noticed it happening
during an install.

Exact same problem here : Ubuntu 11.04 unity, Graphics card GeForce 8400
GS, nvidia-driver-173
By accident, I found that by running NVIDIA Xserver setting, right click
on the NVIDIA icon on unity menu bar, and mark it as Always show is
enough to have the same effect as running the same program
I confirmed the problem was fixed in latest Natty.
Thanks a lot!

I tried to install LSB printer drivers [1][2], but that failed with the error
message below[3].
LSB printer driver packages don't have a direct dependency on libc, because
they depend on the lsb package.
The lsb package has to depend on libc to conform to the LSB.

Just like DerekBuranen, on my system I had the same issue when logging
in a grey box appeared, relogged in with failsafe GNOME and actually got
it to boot once, and it showed the error listed at the top. Well
checking my etc/network/interfaces file and of course i had to do some
commeting items
