I can't reproduce your problem on 4.7.0.6 that is currently in my PPA. I
have created a user with tcsh as a login shell. It's true that mc starts
a little bit slower than with bash, but this difference is hardly

I had the same effect on
//xxx/yyy on /media/calculon type cifs
(rw,mand,noexec,nosuid,nodev,user=zyv)
mc shows the directory size of 9 mb, but du -ch shows 231 mb. If I copy
this folder to the local file system, the size matches. I think it's a
du's problem, not mc. Try to compare with Nautilus

What's the FS on the external drive? Can you try newer packages to see
whether the issue is resolved? The version of mc bundled with Hardy is
really ancient and buggy.

Please break all the (still) relevant pieces of this patch in separate
diffs and submit as tickets to our official Trac. This way it will get
into official Ubuntu package ASAP.
