With default xorg.conf will ubuntu 11.04 boot normal, but all graphic
effects are off.
After reinstalling ATI Catalyst drivers (in my case) and autoupdate
xorg.conf by drivers ubuntu boot to blackscreen again.
In attachmet is my xorg.log file ..

i got the same problem after update from 10.10 to 11.04 ... black screen
after boot
quickfix:
1) press ctrl+alt+f1 and log in
2) delete file xorg.conf (sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf)
3) create new empty xorg.conf (sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf)
4) paste this in xorg.conf:
Section "Device"

black background in all screens, when i use wallpaper
Tested right now . When press CTRL+ALT+F2 and back to gui
CTRL+ALT+F7, diferent wallpapers are ok.
After reboot again black backgrounds ..

I can confirm this bug on my computer (Ubuntu 10.10 / ATI GPU) ..
On lowend Compaq notebook (too ubuntu 10.10) with buildin shared graphic
was everything ok.

I got the same problem, can confirm this bug.
Sub-out dies always when i manually skip track or open another mp3, video,
movie, etc. Tested with Rythmbox, VLC, Totem, ...
Setting the speakers to another configuration and setting it back then to 4.1,
the sound is ok to next skipping/opening anothe
