I don't experience similar behaviour about alternating between Linux and
Windows, Vista in my case.
I also ran acpi_listen before running SDL based dosbox and got not a
single output from it. Weird at least.

Hi! I'm having similar anoying problem. Don't know if different enough
to open a new ticket, but here it is.
When I switch on my laptop (a rebranded ECS laptop with Intel VGA) it's
LCD brightness state change as:
1. Right after switching on: full bright (OK)
2. GRUB: full bright (OK)

The monitor is LG Flatron L1752TQ 17 inches, but I sad before that none
of the distros I have tried worked, but it is not true anymore, mandriva
was the only one that worked.

Since i was forced(Feisty Fawn -> Gutsy upgrade) to use Xine as engine, Amarok
crashes with some mp3. However not all mp3 causes the crash.
Other Xine-based player(gxine, totem-xine, kaffeine-xine, xine-ui) can play

Simply install nvidia-glx or nvidia-glx-new and run the following
command:
sudo nvidia-glx-config enable [This command can be read from synaptic on

It will replace the current driver on /et/x11/xrog.conf tp nvidia, but

Yes, I am sure. In my case, it's an external 40gb 2.5" USB Disk, with
only one partition on it, formated as NTFS. The policy contains
precisely the data I pasted in my first post. The partition automounts
finely using the ntfs-3g driver. I only have the ntfs-3g and ntfs-config
packages installed, f
I believe we are discussing two different problems here. The error you get is
indicative of the absence of polkit, as you correctly observed, and it is an
error I get even without ntfs-config (and I thought about reporting it at the
time, but eventually forgot about it since i could fix the ntfs
excuse me if I insist, but something's still unclear to me: why does the
absence of polkit impair hal's ability to parse a perfectly valid path, such as
/etc/hal/fdi/policy, for policy files ?
And why does hald cache get invalidated but the policy skipped altogether ?
I still don't get it..

This is a wild shot but it may help, I have seen this happen on my
system if I had a usb flash drive plugged in while rebooting it would
give the same error 22, after removing the usb drive and rebooting grub
booted just fine.

After installing Ubuntu 7.04 386 on a acer aspire 9810 post the 1st
reboot if USB flash drive is plugged in a error 22 will show instead of
the bootloader (grub), this only happened while the usb drive was
plugged in after removing the drive and rebooting grub loaded just fine
