To be precise, I'm currently on XUbuntu, so I'm not quite sure why I
even have unity installed (didn't do this on purpose AFAIR) and I don't
know if removing would be more

Had the same issue after I updated to 9.10 and had my first try with UbuntuOne
after setting the timezone (well, put it from Germany/Berlin to a more accurate
Austria/Vienna) and setting up NTP with a near server pool it seems to work...
