Just in case anyone else comes across this before the fix is released:
Booting without the normal splash screen, i.e. /etc/default/grub
contains:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=
and not:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash
can result in the boot hanging waiting for input without a prompt.

Further information: The patch has been back-ported to mainline 3.19.5,
and the mainline 3.19.6 kernel appears to have further improved the
situation, so that booting with the Live2 plugged in also works. I
can't be sure that the problem won't happen again, as it appears to be
timing related,

2. Wait until there is an update for some package (I don't know which one,
suspect an nvidia driver one).
3. Reboot.
Result: gpu-manager deletes xorg.conf.
Expected result: gpu-manager does not delete xorg.conf.

Well if you still get the crash then it is something different. The
dangling signal crash had a specific way to cause it - it wouldn't crash
until you quit thunar - and we were able to verify it was fixed. But
memory corruption can be caused by any number of things and they all
look the same in
Could you please tell us which desktop you are using? Xfce or Unity?
Also where exactly do you right click to make it crash? And do you have
all available updates installed?

both seem to involve menus, and specifically passing a null menu to
unity subsystems somehow.

trace is required by the developers - if they really want one, they can

Firstly this isn't a duplicate bug report - the steps to reproduce are
different.
Secondly, the steps to reproduce work on any hardware, so if a developer
was really interested in fixing this it would be trivial for them to
simply repeat the steps to reproduce and get a backtrace.

This bug is ancient. It is highly unlikely we will be able to fix it, as
the application menu and places menu are two different plugins, so they
can't communicate directly. So we would have to make a message passing
system in the panel or combine the two plugins in to one.
