Tried several solutions above (not upstart-sys) but nothing worked for
me. I could only get into a graphical session by typing startx from a
TTY. Logs didn't output anything that I was able to make sense of, so,
for the time being I've uninstalled sddm and have replaced it with slim.
Now I can log
After spending several hours back with compositing I'm glad to report
all artifact issues seem to be fixed! Many thanks.

Maybe I missed something here but it's unfortunately not fixing my
compositing issues with Kubuntu. I got Kwin to crash twice and noticed
one artifact (there's progress already since I got many before) - Please
see attached.
$ dpkg -l | grep xserver-xorg-video-intel
ii xserver-xorg-video-intel
I can confirm that it works too. Thanks so much for the quick fix!
