After upgrade of the kernel to 2.6.32-28-generic from kernel
2.6.32-27-generic, I have no sound anymore through my laptop speakers.
Sound can be listened to normally when a headphone is plugged in.
Restarting the computer with kernel 2.6.32-27 restores the expected
behavior:

To add to this:
I remembered that I use the linux-backports-modules-alsa-lucid-generic
package. This package has installed version 2.6.32-27; and when
attempting an upgrade I get the error message that the backports-
modules-alsa-2.6.32-28-generic package is not present, and thus not
installable.

I have re-tested this issue on Ubuntu Lucid 10.04. The bug is not
occurring: button assigning seems to work. Superb! Thanks for looking
into this, even with such an old reported bug.
Here is what I did to test:
(NB I have no access here to my old PC, I connected the Wacom Graphire4 pad
On Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit, Network ManagerApplet 0.7.996, I could not browse
to my Private Key .p12 file. That is, it did not show up in the file
browser when I clicked the browse button. I could solve this by typing
the full file location into the address bar, i.e.
/home/myhome/myPersonalKeyfile.p12.
yes, both xserver-xorg-core-dbg, and libgl1-mesa-dri-dbg were
installed.

OK. I just stopped playing with that gdb debugging program after some
hours. Sorry, but it didn't work out:
I followed all instructions in the link; I do observe that Xorg is
attached to gdb since I cannot mouse/type on the screen until I type
'cont' on my remote PCHowever, the backtrace full

I have the two /var/log/Xorg.0.log files you requested for, see attach.
The command 'diff Xorg.0.log Xorg.0.log.old' gives the following output:
