The icon size for Nautilus is set to Compact, which is reflected in
Nautilus window, but is not reflected on Desktop icons. The desktop
icons stay the same size as shown in the screenshot no matter what
preference is selected. The desktop icon sizes could be changed in
Natty,

Once I perform a sudo apt-get update, I can see the updates available in
Update Manager, but the session indicator still shows as System Up to
Date instead of Updates Available even after waiting for 5 to 10
minutes. Attaching screenshot for reference.

No, I've tried that too before reporting. See my new screenshot below.
Changes in preferences also doesn't affects the icon size everywhere in
Nautilus except desktop icons.

Installing sudo apt-get rdesktop solves the problem. But out of the box
Vinagre is not able to connect to RDP.
