No, there is no hard drive activity when sitting at the cursor, and I left it for a few hours yesterday and it was still stuck there. All of the volumes are clean and have the mount count/interval set to -1 or 0 so it shouldn't do a full fsck on any of them anyway. I might try the ubuntu-boot PPA
