I'm having the same problem after the Pidgin upgrades on April 7,2009.
Restarting Nautilus restores the icons but must be done after every
reboot.

I installed mondo 2.24-3ubuntu1 from the Ubuntu repo. Had a problem with
it so I climbed on the mondo-devel list and was told 2.24=2.2.4 and that
the latest was 2.2.7 which I went ahead and installed. Looks
